Mymensingh, Bangladesh: A 25-year-old Hindu factory worker, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched and set on fire by a mob in Bhaluka, Mymensingh district, amid unrest in Bangladesh. The incident has sparked widespread outrage both within the country and internationally. According to police and media reports, Das was assaulted by a crowd following allegations of blasphemy. Eyewitness accounts indicate that he was beaten severely, tied to a tree, and his body was later set ablaze, causing traffic disruption on the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway. Of these: 7 arrests were made by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) 3 arrests were made by local police The suspects range in age from 19 to 46 years. Authorities stated that operations were carried out at multiple locations to apprehend those involved. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus condemned the killing, stating: “There is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.” Police Handling Under Scrutiny Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen raised serious concerns regarding the sequence of events, alleging that Das was falsely accused and questioning the role of law enforcement after he was reportedly taken into police custody before being handed back to the mob. These allegations have intensified calls for an independent investigation. Political and Public Reactions Several political leaders and human rights advocates condemned the incident: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor questioned the steps being taken to punish those responsible and prevent future attacks. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the killing a “heinous crime against humanity.” Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan highlighted historical ties between India and Bangladesh, urging protection for minorities.
